Young and Schreifels Lead Women's Soccer Past Whitworth

The junior duo helped women's soccer move to 2-0 in NWC play

SPOKANE, Wash.—Sophia Young stopped a career-high 11 shots and Celeste Schreifels scored her first goal of the season, to lead Lewis & Clark women's soccer to a 1-0 shutout win over host Whitworth University on Sunday.

THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 1, Whitworth 0
(Lewis & Clark 2-2-1, Northwest Conference 2-0)
(Whitworth 1-3-1, NWC 1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers junior duo helped Lewis & Clark open the NWC season 2-0 for just the third time since the 2006 season.

Young helped the Pioneers secure their fourth-straight shutout, three in the regular season, by stopping double-digit shots for the first time in her collegiate career. She made three saves in the first half and tied her career-high for saves in a single-game with eight saves in the second half alone.

Schreifels scored the only goal Young and the Pioneers defense would need in the 10th minute. Brecklyn Beighle forced a turnover in the Pirates defensive half and sent a pass to the edge of the hosts 18-yard box. A Pioneer slid a pass in front of Sofia Congram who was making an overlapping run and Schreifels rose to connect with Congram's cross for a header goal at 9:29.

The hosts would hold an advantage in shots and possession in the contest but struggled to break down the Pioneers defense and really pressure Young. In the second half, Whitworth held a 10-4 advantage in shots (8-3 in shots on goal).

BY THE NUMBERS
  • In two games this weekend, the Pioneers defense allowed zero goals and 12 shots on target. Lewis & Clark's defense owns a 323:06 regular-season shutout streak. The team's three-straight shutouts is their longest defensive scoreless streak since last October 2-10, when they earned four-straight shutout wins in NWC play.
  • Young has posted a scoreless performance in three of her four outings this year. She now has recorded 20 saves to just two goals against and owns a 0.67 goals against average and .909 save percentage.
  • With the win, the Pioneers join the 2014 and 2018 teams as the only Lewis & Clark squads to open 2-0 in NWC play since 2006.
  • Schreifels officially opened her scoring account with her game-winning tally in the first half. The Pioneers leading goal and point scorer last year posted a goal and an assist in last Sunday's exhibition win over Everett Community College and an assist in Saturday's win over Whitman.
  • The Pioneers are now 2-0-2 in their last four meetings against Whitworth dating back to the 2018 season.
  • Young is now tied for second in program history in career wins (11) and third overall in shutouts (12). She also went over 100 saves for her career in the win on Sunday (105).
  • Schreifels moved into sole possession of sixth-place all-time in program career goal scoring (12) on Sunday.
WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark will host the University of Puget Sound on Saturday at Noon in their 2022 NWC home opener. The Pioneers will be looking to start 3-0 in NWC play for the first time since the program was elevated back to varsity status in 2004.
