Women's Soccer Breaks Scoreless Streak, Defeats Whitman In NWC Opener

Graduate student Sara Klott scored her first career game-winning goal

WALLA WALLA, Wash.—Lewis & Clark College women's soccer scored two second-half goals, to secure a 2-0 victory in their Northwest Conference season opener.

THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 2, Whitman 0
(Lewis & Clark 1-2-1, 1-0-0 NWC)
(Whitman College 3-1, 0-1 NWC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Graduate student Sara Klott and senior Brecklyn Beighle scored the Pioneers first two goals of the season in an eight-minute span, to lift the Pioneers to their first win of the year and hand host Whitman their first loss of the season.

With the score tied at halftime, Lewis & Clark pummeled the hosts with 13 second-half shots and seven on target.

Klott broke the scoreless deadlock just before the hour mark. Senior back Alexa Myers lined up behind a free kick just in front of the Pioneers bench and booted a high ball into the box that no one got a touch on. After a high first bounce, Klott was the first to react, as she raced over to the ball and looped a left-footed kick over the on-rushing goalie and in for a 1-0 advantage at 59:42.

The Pioneers doubled their lead exactly eight minutes later. After forcing a turnover at the top of their own defensive 18-yard box, the Pioneers pushed the ball up the field and found Celeste Schreifels at the edge of the 18. She managed to control a bouncing ball and laid it off for senior Brecklyn Beighle. Beighle shook off an on-rushing defender and then blasted a 30-yard, left-footed, line drive shot just under the bar that the Whitman keeper couldn't jump high enough to keep out.

Whitman managed their first shot on goal in the 74th minute, but junior goalie Sophia Young had no problems scooping up the low bouncing shot.

  • Myers scored the Pioneers final goal of the 2021 season on a free kick and helped the team open their 2022 scoring with a free kick.
  • The Pioneers outshot the hosts 16-8, held a 9-1 edge in shots on goal and a 4-1 lead in corner kicks.
