Puget Sound Downs Pioneers In Regular-Season Finale

Box Score

TACOMA, Wash.—Lewis & Clark baseball set the program record for strikeouts in a single-season in their 2022 regular-season finale at the University of Puget Sound on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pioneers struck out three batters (258 on the season) to break the 1990 team's mark of 256 strikeouts in a single-season.

KEY MOMENTS

With the Loggers having everything to play for and the Pioneers already eliminated from Northwest Conference Tournament contention, Puget Sound recorded 11 extra-base hits and 24 total hits in the victory.

The Pioneers had 10 hits and worked eight walks in the loss, but Lewis & Clark couldn't overcome a season-high 16 runners left on base.

Senior Jack Thomson and sophomore Luke Bass each reached base four times in the loss. Both players had a pair of singles and two walks, with Bass scoring twice and Thomson touching home plate one time.

Senior Dylan Moore added two hits, one walk, one run and an RBI. Brennen Davis was the final Pioneer to finish with two hits.

Freshman Casey Parson added a two-run single, a run scored and two walks. Sophomore Blake Tellinghusen had the biggest hit of the game, as the catcher belted a three-run double-the Pioneers lone extra-base hit of the contest.

On the mound, the Pioneers used seven different pitchers in their final game of the season. Brett Pierson went the first three innings and allowed two runs. Brayden Nomura allowed just one run over two innings of relief and Ryan Havey was the lone Pioneers reliever to not allow a run (0.1 innings).

With the Pioneers down 2-0 after three innings, Lewis & Clark tied the game in the top of the fourth. Thomson and Bass singled to lead off the inning and moved up 90 feet on a two-out Moore single. Parsons lifted a single just over the outstretched glove of the second baseman in shallow center to plate Thomson and Bass.

Puget Sound would answer with five runs in the bottom of the inning and score 10 of the next 11 runs to build a 12-3 lead.

The Pioneers lone run during the stretch came in the top of the fifth. Jack Savant reached on a two-base error, took third on a wild pitch and easily scored on a Bass RBI single.

Lewis & Clark cut the deficit in half in the top of the eighth. Bass walked with one out and senior Zack Kon walked with two outs to put two men aboard. Moore ripped a single to center to make it 12-4 and Parsons worked a walk to load the bases. Tellinghusen came through with a bases-clearing double to make it 12-7.

The hosts put the game away in the bottom half of the inning, as the Loggers scored seven runs to push their advantage out to 19-7.
