Carroll and Richards Each Score Career-High 26 Points In Loss to Whittier

Women's basketball opened the Puget Sound Tournament with a 65-58 loss to the Poets

Tacoma, Wash. – Juniors Charlotte Carroll and Jamison Richards each scored a career-high 26 points to combine for 52 of Lewis & Clark College's 58 points against Whittier College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Pioneers improved with each quarter from the field and outscored the Poets in each of the final three quarters in their opening game of the University of Puget Tournament. 
 
Carroll had a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with her career-scoring night to lead the Pios. She scored her first point less than two minutes into the game but did not score again until almost four minutes were gone in the second. Carroll then scored seven points in the second, eight in the third, and ten in the fourth. She had 12 of her 15 rebounds on the defensive end. She finished the game 10-15 from the field and 6-10 from the free throw line. 
 
Richards hit a career-high seven baskets from long range, recorded their first collegiate block, and pulled down six boards to go along with their career-high in points. They had 18 points in the second half, including a four-point play at the buzzer to cap an 11-0 Pios' run over the last 1:26 of the game. Richards ended the game 9-16 from the field, 7-12 from deep and 1-1 from the charity stripe. 
 
Juniors Natalie Elstone and Karli Mukai and freshman Emily Newton scored two points to round out the Pios' scoring.
 
The Pioneers were down 21-8 after the first quarter. They closed the gap to 30-18 at the half. After three, the Pios were down 46-36. Whittier extended their lead to 60-38, only for Lewis & Clark to end the game on a 20-5 run. 
 
Lewis & Clark's shooting percentage improved with every quarter of the game. After shooting 19.2% in the first half, Lewis & Clark improved to 47 % in the second. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Mukai and Elstone each had five assists against the Poets. 
  • Senior Kendal Jones and Mukai pulled down four rebounds apiece. 
  • The Pios shot 9-15 from the charity stripe for their best outing of the season. 
  • The Pioneers scored 23 points off turnovers and won the battle of the boards 39-38. 
 
WHO'S NEXT
The Pioneers continue to play at the Puget Sound Tournament on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Chapman University of the SCIAC.
