Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Spoils Men's Basketball's Season Opener

Senior Jack Henderson posted a game-high 27 points and six rebounds

PORTLAND, Ore.—Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored 56 points on 75 percent shooting in the first half, to spoil Lewis & Clark College men's basketball's 2022-23 season opener in front of their home fans at Pamplin Gymnasium.

THE BASICS
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) 95, Lewis & Clark 63
(Lewis & Clark 0-1)
(CMS 2-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior Jack Henderson finished with a game-high 27 points and six rebounds in the loss but the Pioneers couldn't slow down a Stags team that was fresh off a win over #2 Mary-Hardin Baylor in their own season opener.

Henderson finished 7-15 from the field, knocked down all six of the team's made 3-pointers (6-11) and finished an efficient 7-8 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Sebastian DePrez was the only other Pioneer in double-figures. The center posted a career-best 10 points (5-7 from the field) and chipped in with three rebounds.

Junior transfer Nikko Echalas added six points, a game-high five assists and proved to be a huge spark-plug off the bench for the Pioneers.

Josh Angle led four CMS players in double figures with 22 points on 6-7 three-point shooting. Rhett Carter (18 points), Justin Pratt (12 points) and Kiran Kruse (11 points) all joined Angle in double-figures.

Junior Jayden Simpson scored a layup 1:17 into the game to tie the contest and give the Pioneers their first points of the season. That would be the final tie of the game as Lewis & Clark struggled to slow down the Stags offense that went large stretches of the half without a miss.

The visitors stretched the lead to double-figures (26-14) nine-and-half minutes into the game and would never let the Pioneers closer than 10 the rest of the way. CMS used a late 8-0 run to go into the half leading 56-27.

Lewis & Clark would pick up their play in the second half and would hold the Stags to just 39 points in an even 20 minutes.

The Pioneers went on a mini 5-0 run early in the half, when Henderson drained a deep 3-pointer and DePrez followed with a lay-in to cut the deficit to 65-39.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Freshmen Taien Jackson, TJ Muhammad and transfers Khalil Glover-Dodson and Echalas all made their Pioneers debuts in the contest. Jackson and Muhammad each made their collegiate debuts in the game.
  • Henderson's 27 points are the second-most of his career. Last winter, he finished with 32 points in 30 minutes against Pacific Lutheran University at home.
  • Brenden Patrick and Simpson tied for fourth on the team with four points apiece.
  • Henderson also added two blocks and two steals in the contest.
  • Lewis & Clark finished 12-16 (75 percent) from the free throw line in the second half and 13-18 for the game (72.2 percent).
