Schreifels Late Goal Lifts Women's Soccer To 1-1 Tie

Portland, Ore.
–Junior Celeste Schreifels scored with 2:01 remaining to lift Lewis & Clark College women's soccer to a 1-1 tie against visiting Whitworth University.

THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 1, Whitworth 1
(Lewis & Clark 4-5-4, NWC 4-3-3)
(Whitworth 3-6-4, NWC 3-4-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a defensive stalemate in the first half, the chances picked up in the final 30 minutes.

In the 63rd minute of the match, the Pirates scored off a free kick from 30 yards out when the ball deflected off of keeper Sophia Young's gloves and into the net. Young suffered an injury on the play, and the junior would not return. The goal occurred after the Pioneers initially stopped Camryn Gardner's first free kick, but were ruled to have not given 10-yards.

Freshman Delaney Jones replaced Young in the net and ended with two saves against the Pirates. The biggest save was a hard shot from close to the penalty spot in the 70th minute that she blocked straight up and caught on its way down.

Senior Brecklyn Beighle started the Pioneers late goal. Beighle sent a free kick into the box that deflected off the hands of the Whitworth keeper. The ball found its way to the foot of graduate student Sarah Klott, who booted the ball into the box. Junior Celeste Schreifels was waiting and with her back to the net, redirected the shot with the bottom of her foot for the equalizer. Schreifels found the net for the fifth time this season, and Klott recorded her first assist of the year.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Schreifels has 16 career goals and 38 career points, good for fourth and fifth on the Pioneers' all-time lists.
  • Sophomore Abby Hayes and senior Madi Pastores join Beighle as the only Pios to play all 180 minutes this weekend.
  • The Pioneers had a 15-9 shot advantage.
  • Beighle led all players with four shots on goal.
