PAMPLIN, Ore.—Despite a career-high 176 yards from junior running back
Elijah Washington, Lewis & Clark football suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday in a 66-28 setback to visiting Whitworth University.
THE BASICS
Whitworth 66, Lewis & Clark 28
(Lewis & Clark 2-1, Northwest Conference 0-1)
(Whitworth 3-1, Northwest Conference 1-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams traded scores through the first 15 minutes and Lewis & Clark cut the deficit to 28-21 with 9:21 left in the second quarter. Things would go downhill from there, as the Pirates used a 38-0 scoring run to take control of the game and hand the Pioneers their first loss of the year.
Playing without three of their top four wide receivers, Lewis & Clark turned to a two-back set that gave Whitworth's vaunted defense some serious issues. Washington rushed 10 times for 112 yards and added four receptions for a team-best 64 yards and a touchdown. Starting running back
Dyontae Navarrete was keyed on all afternoon and ended the game with 49 yards.
Senior quarterback
Cruz Montana finished the game 15-24 for 165 yards and three scores.
Senior
Jonathan Newsome made his season-debut and recorded two receptions for 31 yards and his first career receiving touchdown.
Defensively, senior
Jake Bushman paced the team with nine tackles and added a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and one-half tackle for loss. Junior
Daniel Pham tied his career-high with seven tackles and
Sam Meinhard,
Auzzie Ankai and
Jay'Den Dock each tacked on six tackles. Senior
Justin Hope (four tackles) and Dock each finished with a sack apiece.
Whitworth junior quarter Ryan Blair threw for a career-best 407 yards and four touchdowns. Jet Uechi (104 yards) and Ethan Peloquin (100 yards) each finished with over 100 yards receiving and Solomon Hines led the Pirates rushing attack with 44 yards and a touchdown.
After Whitworth scored a touchdown on their opening drive, the Pioneers answered right back with an eight-play scoring drive. The ball never left the hands of Montana, Washington and Navarrete. Facing a third-and-four from the Whitworth 48, Washington got loose on a wheel route on the right side and Montana found him for a 48-yard touchdown pass.
The Pioneers got the ball back immediately. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Hope forced a fumble and
Nando Magallanes dove on the ball at the Whitworth 26. It took Lewis & Clark just five plays to take the lead. Newsome hauled in a big 24-yard catch on 2
nd and 15 and with the Pioneers facing third and goal from the seven, Montana connected with
Adrian Daffy for his second touchdown pass of the day.
Whitworth responded with touchdowns on each of their next two drives to take a 21-14 lead into the second stanza. After a Blair touchdown pass made it 28-14, Lewis & Clark struck back on a crazy play. Washington broke through the middle of the Whitworth defense and looked as if he was going to go all the way, before a Pirates defender knocked the ball loose inside the 10. Senior
Sean Bodi dove on the football in the end zone for a fumble recovery touchdown and a 28-21 deficit.
The Pirates offense would start clicking from there. They scored on six of their next seven drives to open up a lead on the Pioneers.
Lewis & Clark closed out the scoring on their final drive of the game. The Pioneers marched down the field on a 15-play, 75-yard drive that included one third-down conversion and two on fourth-down. Montana connected with
Ben Burnham, Bodi and Washington on passes to keep the drive going. With the Pioneers inside the 10, Montana found Newsome streaking across the middle for the senior duo's first career touchdown connection.
