Pioneers drop first pair of the weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALEM, Ore. -- Four runs in the late innings were enough to bring the Lewis & Clark Pioneers back to force extras, but not enough for a win on Saturday against the Willamette Bearcats.

In the finale, the Pios lost 9-8 after putting up three in the seventh on Sammy Benbow's three-run homer, and one in the eighth on Justin Bailey's RBI single. In a 10-5 loss to begin the day, Tyler Gannon and Bailey had doubles.

As he did in the finale of the last series, Dylan Moore homered in both games for a season total of three.

Key Moments | Game 1

Moore hit a ninth-inning homer and scored on a wild pitch, Jack Savant brought in a run on a groundout and Luke Bass hit a sacrifice fly for the Pioneers scoring in the opener.

Pios starter Dominic Monozon lasted 4 1/3 innings, struck out two and allowed six runs on ten hits. Stephen Baker and Cristian Panaro provided relief and gave up a home run apiece. Lewis & Clark committed three errors, but Willamette (14-8, 8-6 NWC) stranded 12 runners. Sam Helms joined Gannon, Moore and Bailey with hits.

Key Moments | Game 2

Benbow's home run, which matches his career high of three, completed a comeback from 7-1 down. Gannon got the Pios on the board in the fourth with an RBI single.

Lewis & Clark put up three runs in each the fifth and seventh innings. In the former, Moore hit a two-RBI home run and Zack Kon scored Jack Thomson on a single. In the seventh, Moore led off with a single and Thomson was hit by a pitch - the 11th time this season - to put two on for Benbow's blast.

Bailey gave the Pios the lead in the top of the eighth when he singled in David Schmidt. Tyler Vandemark answered with an RBI single in the bottom half to tie the game for Willamette. In the top of the 10th with the runner placed at second base, Ethan Dunnam laid down a bunt single that scored Sean Little for the walk-off win.

Noah Ferruggia threw four innings and struck out four, Kris Wuelfing threw 3 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run before Moore pitched the final 1 1/3 innings without an earned run. The Pioneers committed two errors in the game.
