Pios held winless in Saturday tripleheader

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers were held without a win in a trio of seven-inning games against the Pacific Boxers on Saturday at Huston Sports Complex. 

Jack Thomson, Sam Helms and Tyler Gannon had multi-hit games during the tripleheader. The Pios were downed by scores of 10-4, 11-8 and 16-3. 

Brayden Nomura, Brian Tatman and Cristian Panaro threw scoreless relief. The three-game set took just over eight hours.

Key Moments | Game 1

The Pioneers had their biggest offensive spurt in the sixth. Lewis & Clark used three free bases - Luke Bass and Helms were hit by pitches, and Justin Bailey walked - to score four runs. Jack Savant had an RBI single, Thomson scored another on a groundout and Bailey scored on a wild pitch. 

Thomson finished 2 for 3 with an RBI. Dominic Monozon allowed six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two. Kris Wuelfing pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed four runs. Tatman closed out the game with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless work with two hits and one walk allowed. He struck out one.

Key Moments | Game 2

Gannon's two-RBI single gave the Pios their first lead of the series in the first inning. After the Boxers added four runs in the third, Zack Kon hit a solo home run, and Gannon scored on Bass' groundout to even the game at four apiece. 

The Pioneers nearly pulled even again in the fifth when Sammy Benbow hit a triple down the right-field line. 7-6 was the closest the Pios got the rest of the way.

Gannon was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBI on one walk. Helms added a double. The Pios had two double plays in the game. Noah Ferruggia allowed seven hits and a walk for five runs with two strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. Tyler Shimabukuro gave up one hit and two walks, Tal Jones pitched to one batter and Anthony Clerici allowed four runs on four hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Nomura threw the final inning and gave up one hit against four batters.

Key Moments | Game 3

The Pioneers scored their runs when Gannon was hit by a pitch and Benbow grounded out in a 16-3 defeat during the finale.

John Delaney and Mason Lee each had their first collegiate hits to go with singles by Benbow and Bass.

Brett Pierson allowed nine runs on nine hits, a walk and four strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings. Panaro replaced him and threw 2 1/3 innings without yielding a run. He gave up two hits and had three strikeouts. Brett Sterrer finished the game and allowed seven runs over two innings of work. He walked four and struck out three.

Looking Ahead

The finale is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
