Pios win more singles, but fall in non-NWC match

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers won the middle singles matches, but without a doubles win, fell 5-4 in a non-conference match-up with the Pacific Boxers on Sunday.

Riley Vickers won the highest singles match, No. 2, for the Pios. Shane Lynette, Daniel Lane and Miles Stone were also winners.

Key Moments

Kristian Peev and Vickers had the best showing in doubles, falling 8-5 to Koby Murata and Joey Hu in No. 2 position. The other two doubles teams were new pairings, something the Pioneers opted to do with Sunday's match not counting in the Northwest Conference standings.

"We decided to play four doubles and five singles instead of the usual three and six," Pios assistant coach Pannhara Mam said. "We switched some of our doubles teams around to test out partnerships that might work out in future matches.

"Kristian and Riley, at one point, were up 5-2, but a huge momentum shift gave Pacific confidence to reel off six straight games."

The singles lineup was completely new for the Pios according to Mam. Vickers beat Joey Balleweg, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2, while Lynette was the winner in third position over Garret Katayama, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Lane competed in his highest spot of the season, No. 4, and won over Cooper Rich, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. In fifth position, Stone beat Jeffrey Kubota 6-2, 7-6 (7-6) for Stone's first win of the year.
