Pios drop final game of Pacific series

Box Score

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers dropped their final game of the weekend against the Pacific Boxers, losing 13-5 in the largest deficit of the weekend. Despite a strong showing offensively, the Pios struggled on the mound, allowing 12 hits and two home runs across five pitching changes.

The Pioneers matched the Boxers' 12 hits, with three coming from Michael Contreras in four at-bats. Contreras contributed one run and was one of five players to hit a double. Jack Thomson had a team-high two runs and hit the Pios' lone homer of the game. He had two RBI's, one hit, and one strikeout in three at-bats.

Andrew Yarak was the starting pitcher for the Pios, logging 4.2 innings and facing off against 26 batters. He had one strikeout and allowed eight hits and seven runs. Brayden Nomura saw 1.2 innings of play and had a team-high two strikeouts.

Key Moments

The first inning saw lots of action, with the Pios getting two on the board at the top of the inning before the Boxers answered with five. Contreras started the game with a double to left field but was caught on a fielder's choice that got Justin Bailey to first. Bailey made it to second on a steal and was brought home when Thomson homered to the right side. Zack Kon followed up with a single to right field and was advanced to third when Tyler Gannon smacked a double to the same spot. Kon and Gannon were left on base when Justin Katona and Sammy Benbow both grounded out.

Pacific brought in one run but had two outs when Yarak walked Ryan Krout and then hit Jordan Hara with a pitch. Dylan Morgan stepped up to the plate with bases loaded and launched one into right field for a grand slam.

The Pios saw a four-inning scoring drought before bringing home their final three runs in the sixth. The Pios had bases loaded when Zack Kon doubled to bring home Jacob Serafini and Contreras, advancing Thomson to third. Gannon's sacrifice fly brought in Thomson before Katona popped up to Chase Anderson at shortstop. Pacific again answered with another five runs, after contributing two in the third. A final run in the eighth for the Boxers sealed the win.

"It was great to see our offense put together a good game after struggling yesterday. Unfortunately, we just didn't have it on the mound." Said head coach Matt Kosderka, "Contreras, Kon, Benbow and others put together some really solid swings and it was nice to see Thomson get into one. We'll need similar results going forward when our pitching gives us a chance to win."

Deeper Look

  • The Pios left 12 stranded to the Boxers' seven
  • Benbow and Bailey both hit doubles in addition to Contreras, Kon and Gannon
  • Thomson's was his first home run of the season and third of his career
  • This is Gannon's second game in a row with two hits
