After delay, Pios lose opener

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers lost their opener on Saturday after a two-hour rain delay. The Pios fell 8-4 to the Whitworth Pirates.

Stephen Baker pitched four innings of scoreless relief after the Pios fell behind 5-0. Jacob Serafini had a pair of RBI for the Pioneers.

Key Moments

The Pios (9-23, 4-15 NWC) scored three runs in the fifth inning to close the game to within two. Justin Katona started the inning with a leadoff single, and two batters later, Tyler Gannon hit a single to load the bases. Serafini walked in a run, a balk by pitcher Austin Rice led to another before Matt Donovan scored on Cooper Larson's strikeout.

In the ninth inning, Serafini hit an RBI single to score Cole Petters.

Jordan Gonzalez (1-6) started the game and allowed two earned runs on eight hits with a strikeout. Travis Benham replaced Baker and threw the final two innings. He allowed three runs on three hits with a strikeout.
