The Pioneers win one, lose one in their second day of California trip

LA VERNE, Calif -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers used an offensive surge to win their opener, 18-5 over New Rochelle, on the second day of play in southern California. The Pios totaled 15 RBI including three from Cooper Larson to go with two doubles by Cameron Paton.

Along with Larson, four other Pioneers totaled multiple RBI. Paton hit both of his doubles during the Pioneers' seven-run fifth inning, first to lead off the inning and again to bring in a run. Paton also stole two bases.

Dominic Monozon (2-5) threw seven innings and allowed one earned run on five hits to go with six strikeouts for his second victory of the year.

Key Moments

Lewis & Clark started the game quickly with seven runs over the first three innings. Larson hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning before his walk scored the first run of the second. Ryan Ericksen, Joey Oda and Jacob Serafini all brought in runs by hit or sacrifice fly over the first three innings.

Ericksen finished with two RBI, as did Jack Thomson, Sammy Benbow and Tyler Gannon. Dylan Moore joined Paton with multiple hits, one of which was a double, for the first multi-hit game of his career.

New Rochelle pitchers combined for 13 walks, four hit batters and numerous wild pitches, although the Blue Angels committed just one error.

Game 2

The Pioneers were beaten by the La Verne Leopards, 12-0, in the day's finale. The Pioneers totaled seven hits while La Verne starter Alfredo Frey struck out four. Lewis & Clark stranded 10 runners.

Robert Reaser pitched 4 2/3 innings and struck out two in the loss. Lewis & Clark walked a total of eight batter and committed three errors.

Justin Katona had a two-hit game to lead the Pios offensively.

Key Moments

The Leopards (17-8) used a lead-off triple by Jacob Benson to spark a four-run fifth inning, but Lewis & Clark slowed La Verne's momentum and allowed just one run before netting two straight outs with one runner on. Adam Santa Cruz took the next pitch out for a home run to move the Leopards up 5-0 and Ligot added another on an RBI double later in the inning.

Lewis & Clark (5-21) allowed four more runs in the ninth inning.

The Pios had a runner on third in the second inning after a lead-off single by Thomson, Zack Kon's sacrifice bunt and Benbow reaching on a fielder's choice. Benbow was thrown out at second base and Katona struck out to end the inning.

Donovan, Serafini, Larson, Thomson and Kon all had hits for the Pioneers.

  • Reaser (0-2) took the loss on six hits, six runs and four walks
  • Travis Benham allowed one run over 1 1/3 innings before Isaac Blake pitched the next 1 1/3 and struck out two
