Pioneers secure 10-win season in defeat of Linfield

 

McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- The 31st-ranked Lewis & Clark Pioneers won all six singles matches including a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 by Raed Attia to defeat the Linfield Wildcats, 8-1, on Friday at Linfield Tennis Center.

The win moves the Pios to 10-5 overall this season and 6-1 in the Northwest Conference, a half-game ahead of Pacific, which Lewis & Clark hosts on Saturday in the regular-season finale for the Pioneers.

Attia took down Nathan Saragoza in the top singles match for his third NWC victory this season. At 5-10, Attia is now 3-6 in No. 1 singles matches.

The bottom-three singles matches saw Pioneers win comfortably including Ramez Attia at No. 5 where he took a 6-2, 6-1 win over JT Barcellos. Brendan Adams was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Jacob Mangan in sixth position, while Brenden Barrows defeated Trent Prussing, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4. Adams improved to 7-2 overall and remains undefeated (4-0) in NWC duals, while Barrows ticked up to 8-6 overall and 5-0 within the conference.

In the two doubles matches the Pios won they gave up a total of three games. Brenden Barrows and Gordon Barrows, ranked No. 23 nationally, won over Ben McNair and Luis Rojas, 8-2, while Kei Inoue and Raed Attia were 8-1 winners over Eric Rutherford and Prussing in the second spot. The Barrowses are now 14-5 overall and 5-1 within the NWC, while Attia and Inoue moved to 10-2 overall. The pair remains undefeated in conference at 7-0.

Gordon Barrows won the No. 2 singles match, 7-5, 6-2, over Rojas, while Inoue took the third position pairing, 6-2, 7-5, over McNair. Barrows bumped up to 11-4 overall this season and Inoue is now 9-4.

Linfield falls to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in the NWC.

Already guaranteed a spot in the four-team NWC Championships on Apr. 21-22, a Pioneers victory over Pacific on Saturday (11 a.m.) will secure Lewis & Clark the No. 2 seed behind Whitman. The tournament will be held in Walla Walla, Wash. with the two semifinals winners meeting in Sunday's championship dual.
