Lewis & Clark scores first before dropping both

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Matt Donovan's run in the third inning was the only run of the day for the Lewis & Clark Pioneers on Friday at Huston Sports Complex. Donovan, who finished 2 for 4 in the game, crossed during Sean Shepherd's at-bat in a 5-1 loss to the Whitworth Pirates in the opener.

Kevin Jacobs hit safely in his first three at-bats to finish 3 for 4, but the Pioneers struck out 13 times against Whitworth starter Hugh Smith and left seven runners on base.

Donovan had one of two doubles for his team-leading 14th of the year. He also stole a base, his sixth of the season, adding to his career best.

Nick Kennison (1-6) started and threw 8 2/3 innings before Zach Merzlak got the Pios' final out. Taylor Poffenroth had an RBI double in the ninth before Kennison was replaced. He was one of three Pirates with multi-hit games.

Smith improved to 7-0 on the season after allowing one unearned run.

The Pioneers threatened early after Donovan opened the Pioneers' hitting day with a single and Shepherd was hit to give Lewis & Clark two aboard with one out in the first. In the fifth, Jacobs led off with a single and Jacob Serafini walked for a pair of base runners with no outs. In the seventh, Jacobs was on second with one out, but the Pioneers scored no one in those three innings.

Game 2

A three-run third on a double by Taylor Poffenroth and an RBI single by Tyler Bailey got the Whitworth Pirates going early as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers lost 8-0.

Max Gordon finished 2 for 3 for the Pioneers' only multi-hit game. Kevin Jacobs had another hit to give the freshman four total in the opening day of the series with Whitworth. Matt Donovan had a stolen base to give him seven on the year.

Robert Reaser (1-7) was pulled after throwing 6 2/3 innings and allowing eight runs on 11 hits while also matching his career high with 10 strikeouts. Brady Simmelink (3-1) earned the win for Whitworth, which was led by Tyler Bailey's four-hit performance.

The Pioneers struck out 12 times.

Game three of the series begins at noon on Saturday.
