Powell, G. Barrows win top singles as Pios take seventh in last eight

PORTLAND, Ore. -- With five matches left in the regular season following Saturday's 8-1 win over the Austin 'Roos, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers have now won seven of their last eight matches. 

Jackson Powell and Gordon Barrows won the top two singles matches to help the 33rd-ranked Pioneers to a 5-0 edge in the dual following a sweep of the doubles sets at the L&C Tennis Dome. Powell won over Kenneth Hardy, 6-2, 6-2, in his first-ever No. 1 singles match. The sophomore improved to 8-2 overall this season while competing solo. Gordon Barrows bumped up to 4-1 in top-two singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Josh Granberry in second position.

The Pioneers improved to 8-3 overall as a team.

Nationally-ranked doubles pair Gordon Barrows and Brenden Barrows won the No. 1 doubles match-up against Hardy and Andres Padilla, 8-2. Lewis & Clark won all three doubles sets without yielding more than three games. Pim Trouerbach and Powell continued their undefeated season with an 8-2 win over Erik Meendsen and Granberry. The Pios duo is 6-0 this season. At No. 3, Raed Attia and Kei Inoue defeated Travis Fortune and Calum Robe, 8-3. They're now 7-1.

Ramez Attia, Keane Hindle and Brendan Adams combined to win the bottom three singles matches. Attia played a counting singles pairing for the fourth time in the last five matches and beat Calum Robe, 6-2, 2-6, 10-3, in fourth position for his fifth straight win. At No. 5, Hindle beat Meendsen, 7-5, 6-2, for his fourth win of the season. Adams won over Preston Spivey, 6-0, 6-1 in sixth position for his fourth consecutive singles victory.

Austin's Padilla beat Brenden Barrows, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5, for the 'Roos only point. Austin falls to 5-7 on the season.

Lewis & Clark competes at George Fox on Sunday, the first of four straight road matches. The Pios host Senior Day on Apr. 14 against Pacific.
