WILSONVILLE, Ore. -- Despite totaling only one fewer hit and no errors, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers dropped their season-opening game 4-0 to the Whitworth Pirates on Friday evening. Both teams stranded six runners.

The game, played at Wilsonville High School south of Portland, was the Pios debut after a four-game tournament last weekend was postponed because of weather.

After Whitworth scored a run in the top of the first, Lewis & Clark left two runners on in both the second and third. First, Nick Lockwood and Ben Beck reached on an error and walk, respectively, but were stranded when Tommy Massari struck out. The Pirates totaled two more runs in the top of the third on Matthew Nelson's home run. Lewis & Clark had runners in scoring position in the third inning after Jacob Burton singled and Matthew Donovan reached on an error. Akira Abderrahman flied out and Sean Shepherd struck out to end the inning.

The Pioneers left one runner on in the fifth and eighth.

Drake Gilliland started the game and threw five innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits. He struck out five, walked the same and allowed the homer to Nelson. Connor Eggleston made his collegiate pitching debut, tossing two innings of one-hit ball. He walked and struck out a pair. Nat Richman gave up two hits in his two innings on the mound to end the game.

Ryan Kingma struck out four, allowed three hits and walked one to earn the win for Whitworth. Darren Crosby picked up the save.

Lewis & Clark is back at Wilsonville High School on Sunday for two games. At 2 p.m., the Pioneers play Willamette before a 5 p.m. game against Puget Sound.
