Lewis & Clark uses walkoff win to split with Linfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Game 1 - Lewis & Clark 4, Linfield 3

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Lewis & Clark sophomore third baseman Connor Eggleston brought in the first run of Saturday's opening game, and also was at-bat for the Pios' walkoff run in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the Pioneers defeated the Linfield Wildcats 4-3 at Huston Field.

In the final inning, Eggleston (pictured below right) hit a ball to shortstop with the bases loaded and beat out the double play throw to first, allowing Cameron Paton to score and win the game. Akira Abderrahman started the inning with a single before Paton replaced him to run, advancing to second on a balk by Dylan Peters. The Wildcats intended to walk the next batter, Sean Shepherd, but Peters' second pitch was out of the reach of catcher Jake Gellos, allowing Paton to get to third. Shepherd was eventually walked, as was Nick Lockwood, loading the bases for Eggleston.

Peters had replaced starter Callahan Neely, who pitched eight innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with eight strikeouts.

Lewis & Clark had led the game 3-1, and later 3-2 entering the sixth inning, before Linfield scored the tying run on David Mason's RBI single. Pioneers starter Nathan Klein, vying for his fourth win of the year, pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up 11 hits, three runs with a walk and a strikeout.

After falling behind in the second inning, when Kekoa Kaulukukui's single and a Lewis & Clark error allowed Ryan Pladson to score, the Pios scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Eggleston hit a double to center field, scoring Shepherd, before Ben Beck made one of his two hits to score Eggleston. With Tommy Massari on base, Bradley Lezak brought in another RBI on a single, giving Lewis & Clark a 3-1 lead.

The only other score in the game a home run by Gellos in the fourth inning.

Eggleston finished with two RBI, while Shepherd and Beck had multi-hit games.

Game 2 - Linfield 15, Lewis & Clark 2

Lewis & Clark gave up seven runs in the opening inning on its way to a 15-2 defeat against the Linfield Wildcats in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Huston Field.

Eric Lawson, Ben Andrews, Finn McMichael and David Mason all had multiple RBI and 10 combined hits, while Scott Hilpert went 4 of 5, as the Wildcats put up 16 hits. Five of those came against Lewis & Clark starter Bradley Bourdase, who left the game after facing ten batters in the first inning, getting two outs.

Jack Silva replaced Bourdase, pitching 1 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs before John Trupin filled in for 5 2/3 innings of two-run baseball with four strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Linfield starter Riley Newman threw a complete game on five hits, two runs and five strikeouts.

One bright spot for the Pios was Bradley Lezak's third inning solo home run, his first of the year. He finished with Lewis & Clark's only two RBI, bringing in Lewis & Clark's other run in the bottom of the fifth with a single to right center field.

Lewis & Clark will try to win its second straight Northwest Conference series with the third and final game against Linfield on Sunday at 12 p.m.
