Brewer returns as Lewis & Clark takes all weekend sets

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A year after competing as Lewis & Clark's primary top spot entry, junior Michael Brewer returned to the court on Sunday to help the Pioneers defeat the Puget Sound Loggers 9-0 in a Northwest Conference dual at the L&C Tennis Dome.

For the second straight competition, the Pios didn't drop a single set for their third conference victory this season.

Brewer paired with senior Kevin Ross (1-0) to win the No. 2 doubles match, 8-1, over Nicholas Lupan and Riley Inn. Later, Brewer played in the No. 3 singles spot to defeat Lupan 6-2, 6-0 and begin the year 1-0.

"It was great for all of our guys to get some match experience today," said Lewis & Clark head coach Patrick Dreves. "Likewise to have Michael Brewer make his comeback today."

While Brewer hadn't played at all this academic year, Ross (pictured right) had missed a little time earlier in the spring. After sitting out singles matches against Whitman and Whitworth last week, Ross (2-1) has won two straight, including a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Puget Sound's Daniel Deuel on Sunday in the No. 2 match-up.

Gordon and Brenden Barrows (3-2) took the top spot doubles match, 8-3, over Joe McRoberts and Deuel, while Pim Trouerbach and Keane Hindle improved to 2-1 this season with an 8-2 defeat of Andrew Struzenberg and Chris Severt.

The Pioneers' No. 1 singles competitor, Raed Attia (2-1), didn't yield a set against McRoberts, winning 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 4 position, Harrison Collins improved to 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Inn.

Daniel Hahm (3-2) downed Severt 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot for his second straight win. Ben DeLuca (1-0), a senior transfer from Occidental College, played his first non-exhibition, defeating Struzenberg 6-1, 6-1.

Lewis & Clark sits behind undefeated Pacific and Whitman for third in the NWC, and improved to 3-2 overall. The Pios will play three matches next weekend, two of which will be neutral site match-ups in Walla Walla, Wash. against Swarthmore and Cal Lutheran on Mar. 5-6, respectively. Contests on the latter day will be a split squad for Lewis & Clark, as North Dakota will compete against the Pioneers in Portland as well.
