WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Gordon Barrows was in the matches that came the closest to going the Pios' way, but Lewis & Clark was unable to get a victory against the nationally-ranked Whitman Missionaries on Sunday afternoon, losing the dual 9-0 at Bratton Indoor Tennis Courts.
Barrows (1-2) took the first set tiebreaker, 8-6, in the No. 2 singles match against Phillip Locklear, the 34th-ranked player in the nation, before falling 7-5, 6-1 in the final two sets. The pairing followed Barrows and Brenden Barrows (1-2) losing 8-6 to the No. 14 duo of Zach Hewlin and Locklear in the top doubles match.
Playing without their normal No. 2 singles competitor Kevin Ross, Lewis & Clark had each of its entries playing up a spot behind No. 1 Raed Attia. In the top pairing, Attia (0-3) lost to No. 19 Zach Hewlin 6-2, 6-1.
Attia paired with Harrison Collins (0-1, pictured right) for the No. 2 doubles match in an 8-4 loss to Robert Carter and Adam Rapoport.
Collins (2-1) played Carter closely in the No. 4 singles match, ultimately losing 6-4, 6-3. Brenden Barrows (1-2) was even in his play against Petar Jivkov in the No. 5 position, falling 6-3, 6-3.
Pim Trouerbach (1-1) lost the No. 6 match 6-4, 6-1 to Rapoport, while Daniel Hahm (1-2) lost 6-3, 6-0 to Chase Friedman at No. 3.
Paired with Keane Hindle, Trouerbach (1-1) dropped the No. 3 doubles match, 8-0, to Jivkov and Jake Hoeger.
Entering the match, Lewis & Clark was ranked No. 13 in the West Region as a team, while Whitman was No. 17 in the nation and No. 4 regionally.
Lewis & Clark plays at George Fox on Friday before its first home Northwest Conference match against Pacific Lutheran on Saturday.
