Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. -- For the first time in their careers, there will not be a Northwest Conference tournament. A qualifier the last seven years, including the four prior seasons under head coach Dinari Foreman, Lewis & Clark was playing with no playoff ramifications to end the season on Saturday at the Pamplin Sports Center.
It didn't mean there was nothing at stake.
As one of Lewis & Clark's four seniors, Jason Luhnow scored 25 points, giving him 1,001 for his career, to help the Pioneers to a 74-70 win over the Pacific Boxers. He shot 4 of 6 from 3-point range, with his final three breaking a 65-65 tie with 3:23 remaining in the game to give the Pios a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
"All the guys had their best week," said Luhnow, who was 9 of 13 overall shooting with seven rebounds. "We've done a lot of reflecting on the season. It wasn't the season we had planned for. We had a lot higher expectations, but [for this game] we just had fun together, which was something we harped on in the locker room."
In their final games, Carl Appleton had his first double-double of the season, and seventh of his Lewis & Clark career, scoring 13 points with 12 rebounds. Mat Collins (pictured below) made his first career start, finishing with two points and four rebounds. Kristian Grobecker also started the game and had two assists.
"It was pinnacle of who we are as a team," said Grobecker. "It's good to go out like this and shows the character of the team."
Markel Leonard also scored in double figures with 13 points on 5 of 12 shooting, while Jonathan Boddie added six off the bench. Lewis & Clark shot 51 percent as a team, outrebounding Pacific 28-20.
The Boxers were led by KC Harrison with 18 points, 10 of which came in the first half.
A few minutes into the second half, the Pios held an 11-point lead. Lewis & Clark's first score of the period was a lunging, one-handed dunk by Cannen Roberson, who finished with nine points.
With 8:23 left, JJ Spitler, who hit a 3-pointer in the first meeting between the teams to force overtime in what ultimately became an 80-77 Boxers win in triple overtime, made a jumper as part of seven second half points to give Pacific the lead.
The Lewis & Clark seniors brought the Pios back, with Appleton, Collins and Luhnow each scoring a field goal before Luhnow's 3-pointer moved the Pios back ahead.
The basket ended up being Luhnow's 1,001st career point.
"I've been blessed to play with a lot of good players. All four years here, I've had a lot of great teammates," said Luhnow, who had 964 career points according to the NCAA entering his final two games, in which he scored 12 and 25 points, respectively. "These are brothers, and these relationships last longer than four years, and that is something I treasure."
The win gave the Pios victories in three of their last five games.
