Furious comeback keeps Pios from victory in road finale

SALEM, Ore. -- Brendon McCullough's jump shot with 4:51 remaining in the game gave Willamette a one-point lead, as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers were unable to go back ahead after leading by 17 points at halftime in a 74-69 loss to the Bearcats at Cone Field House on Friday night.

Lewis & Clark played the final 6:25 of the game without a made field goal, only getting off three shots total.

The Pios outscored Willamette 43-26 in the opening 20 minutes, getting 12 points from Jason Luhnow, while holding the Bearcats to 25 percent shooting. Willamette bounced back in the second half, finishing the game 16 of 26, or 62 percent, from the field. The Bearcats made 4 of 5 from 3-point range in the second half while the Pioneers missed all seven of their attempts.

Luhnow (pictured right) had a game-best 13 rebounds, but didn't score in the second half, as Cannen Roberson finished with a game-high 17 points on 6 of 13 shooting. Markel Leonard scored 12 points despite going 0 for 3 from 3-point range.

As a team, Lewis & Clark held a 54-30 edge in rebounding, getting nine apiece from Carl Appleton and Roberson.

Four Willamette players scored in double figures, including 14 points from Alex Brown to lead the team.

Willamette scored 10 of the first 12 points after halftime, getting 3-pointers from Nico Troplent and Bridger Harlington. Lewis & Clark, which led by a game-high 21 points with 1:49 left in the first half, momentarily took the lead back to 12 points before the Bearcats continued their comeback.

Three times, Lewis & Clark went through lulls of 2:30 between field goals in the second half, scoring seven points from the 13:17 mark of the half until there was 8:09 remaining.

After Roberson scored a layup with 6:25 remaining, Harlington made a 3-pointer to tie the game on Willamette's next possession, and Lewis & Clark didn't make another field goal for the rest of the game. The Pios made 7 of 11 free throws during that stretch, shooting 18 of 30 for the game. Willamette went 19 of 22 from the line.

Lewis & Clark hosts its final regular season game on Saturday against Pacific at 6 p.m. Seniors Kristian Grobecker, Mat Collins, Luhnow and Appleton will be recognized before the game.
