Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. -- Aggressive drives and a 3 for 3 stretch to open the second half attempted to change the flow of Lewis & Clark's game against the Whitman Missionaries at Pamplin Sports Center on Friday night. Despite scoring nine of the second half's first 13 points, the Pioneers could only get within 10 of Whitman in the second half, ultimately losing 100-71.
Trailing 50-34 at halftime, Lewis & Clark's Cannen Roberson drew a foul seven seconds into the second half, splitting a pair of free throws. Carl Appleton grabbed an offensive rebound when the second attempt missed, which led to a 3-pointer from Jason Luhnow. He made another basket in between Whitman buckets before Markel Leonard scored and was fouled, completing the three-point play by making a free throw. With just over two minutes off the second half clock, Appleton split two free throws, and the Pioneers were within 54-44.
Lewis & Clark proceeded to score just five points over the next 5:30, as Whitman built its lead back up to 15 points, 66-49, with under 13 minutes remaining.
Later in the half, Whitman's Christian McDonald made four 3-pointers in a span of under two minutes, moving the Missionaries ahead 92-63.
Roberson led the Pioneers with 14 points despite early foul trouble, which limited him to seven minutes in the first half. He shot 4 of 7 in the second half to claim his 11th double-digit scoring performance in the last 13 games. Cory Coombe scored 10 points off the bench to give the Pioneers two players in double figures.
Tim Howell had his eighth 20-plus point scoring night of the season, finishing with 24 points. McDonald ended the game with 21 points, 17 of which came in the second half.
In the first half, Whitman outshot Lewis & Clark 57 to 42 percent, and by 10 percent over the entire game. Overall, Lewis & Clark committed 10 more turnovers than Whitman, 16-6, which led to 21 points for the Missionaries compared to three points for Lewis & Clark.
The Pios did shoot their highest 3-point percentage, 41 percent, since hitting 56 percent in a 79-73 win at Linfield on Jan. 12.
Lewis & Clark hosts No. 1 Whitworth on Saturday night at 6 p.m. The Pioneers lost 76-64 in the first meeting between the two on Dec. 4 in Spokane, Wash.
