Pios defeated by Pacific in triple overtime

Box Score

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- J.J. Spitler's 3-pointer with under 10 seconds remaining forced overtime, and Lewis & Clark wasn't able to prevail in three additional periods, as the Pioneers lost 80-77 in triple overtime to the Pacific Boxers on Friday night at Stoller Center.

The loss is Lewis & Clark's first in the last 18 match-ups against Pacific, and drops the Pios into a tie for fifth with Pacific in the Northwest Conference. It also snaps Lewis & Clark's three-game winning streak.

After Devon Pouncey missed the second of his two free throws at the end of the first overtime, and following each team committing a turnover on each's final possession of the second OT, Lewis & Clark missed its first four field goal attempts in the third overtime to fall behind 77-71.

The Pioneers fouled Pacific on the Boxers' late possessions, but Pacific made 5 of 6 in the game's final 20 seconds. Lewis & Clark was also held without a field goal in the third OT until Markel Leonard scored with 16 seconds remaining.

Lewis & Clark (7-8; 3-4 NWC) had not played an overtime game this season until Friday, and none since February of last year. The last Pioneers overtime game to go more than two overtimes was a 116-112, four-overtime loss at George Fox in Jan. 2012.

Cannen Roberson led the Pioneers in scoring with 15 points over 51 minutes. Jason Luhnow played the same amount of time and put in 14 points, but the two combined to shoot 9 of 29. As a team, Lewis & Clark's field goal percentage plummeted to 19 percent in the second half and overtime periods. Overall, the Pios shot 35 percent, their first sub-40 percent shooting performance since their last loss, 77-73 on Jan. 8 against George Fox.

Skyler Burgess led all scorers with 18 points for Pacific, followed by 15 off the bench by Pouncey. Spitler had 13 points. Pouncey shot 6 of 13 while the other two both hit over 50 percent.

Carl Appleton and Leonard were in double figures as well for the Pioneers, scoring 10 apiece.

After a four-game road swing, Lewis & Clark returns home on Saturday to face Willamette at 6 p.m. The Pios haven't lost to the Bearcats since Jan. 2012.
