Pioneers catch fire from three late to beat Lutes

Box Score

TACOMA, Wash. -- Lewis & Clark made four consecutive second half 3-pointers after starting its game at Pacific Lutheran 2 of 14 to win 68-65 on Friday night at Names Family Court.

The cold shooting start from long range followed the Pios' season-high performance on Tuesday at Linfield, when Lewis & Clark made 57 percent beyond the arc in a 79-73 victory. Lewis & Clark has now won three games in a row, and five of its last six overall.

After leading 34-33 at halftime, Lewis & Clark saw Pacific Lutheran (9-5; 2-3 Northwest Conference) score the first nine points of the second half, eventually leading by 10 points with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

Jason Luhnow and Markel Leonard started the 3-point streak with just over four minutes remaining. After Luhnow made his second, Leonard hit his first of the game with 3:23 left, bringing the Pios within four, 61-57. Luhnow and Cannen Roberson scored triples on the next two Pios possessions to put Lewis & Clark in front, 63-61, its first lead since halftime.

The Pioneers weren't done. After a Lutes basket by Bryce Miller ended the Pios' 12-0 run, Leonard nailed another 3-pointer from the right wing, and Lewis & Clark led 66-63, eventually winning by a three-point margin.

"The stretch of threes was big," said Leonard. "Being down 10 with four minutes left, and being able to come back and win, shows how resilient and tough this team is. We fought through a lot of adversity tonight."

Five different players scored in double figures, including the trio who made the critical threes. Luhnow had a game-high 15 points on 3 of 7 shooting from 3-point range, and 6 of 12 overall. Roberson scored 14 points, while Leonard put in 50 percent of his 10 shot attempts for 12 points. Carl Appleton hit on 5 of 9 from the floor, scoring 11 points, and Jonathan Boddie put in 10 off the bench.

For the game, Pacific Lutheran outshot Lewis & Clark 48 to 45 percent, including a seven percent advantage in the first half. Miller led all Lutes with 14 points, followed by Brandon Lester and Jared Christy with 12 and 10, respectively.

After leading by five twice in the first half, the Pioneers didn't lead again until Roberson's make with 2:15 remaining. Lewis & Clark committed nine turnovers, its lowest in a Northwest Conference game since a league-opening 76-64 loss on Dec. 4 at Whitworth.

"Every timeout and break we had during the game, we kept saying 'just stay together, and get stops,'" said Leonard. "It was a huge win. Every player stuck together and we got a good 'grind it out' victory on the road."

Lewis & Clark (7-7; 3-3 NWC) closes out its current four-game road trip at Pacific on Jan. 22. If the Pios win, they'll finish 4-0 over the stretch after starting the conference season 0-3. The next home game is against Willamette on Jan. 23 at 6 p.m.
