NEWBERG, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark men's tennis team was once again narrowly beat in Northwest Conference action. The Pioneers fell to the George Fox Bruins 5-4 on Sunday afternoon with two losses in doubles action proving to be the difference maker.
Daniel Hahm and Harrison Collins picked up the only doubles win for the Pioneers, pulling out a slim 8-6 vicotry over Nicholas Grafton and Vincent Viloria. Michael Brewer and Kevin Ross nearly pulled out a win in the No. 2 doubles spot, forcing a tiebreaker against Chris Lilley and Chace Stalcup. The Bruins ended up victorious with a 9-8 (7-2) win. Morgan Joyce and Gordon Barrows fell in the No. 1 spot 8-4.
In singles action the Pioneers picked up their three points in the 4-6 positions. Collins had his hands full with Grafton in the No. 4 spot, forcing a tiebreaker in the third set for the win. Collins fell 3-6 in the opening set before taking the final two 7-5 and 7-6 (8-6). Hahm, who competed as the Pios No. 5, also had to win with a tiebreaker in three sets after falling 1-6 in the opening set. Hahm went on to take the final two sets 7-6 (7-4) and 6-4.
Barrows picked up the final point for the Pios in the No. 6 spot with a decisive 6-1, 6-3 win.
Brewer put up a fight against Andrew You in the No. 1 position, nearly pulling out another Pioneer point. The sophomore fell 6-1 in the first set before forcing a tiebreaker in the second set. Brewer won the set 7-6 (8-6) before being bested 6-1 in the third set. Ross fell 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot, while Joyce lost 6-4, 6-1 as the No. 3.
The team returns to action on Sunday, March 15 at home against Willamette.
