LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The #36 Lewis & Clark women's tennis team kicked off their spring break tour of California on Tuesday afternoon with an 8-1 win over UC Santa Cruz.
With the win the Pioneers improve to 10-2 on the season, while the Banana Slugs fall to 2-8.
Playing on outdoor courts, the match was tight early as the Pioneers adjusted to the wind.
The Pios No. 1 doubles pair had their hands full with the Banana Slugs Katy Collins who won the match for her team. Summer Garrison and Claudia Lew put up a fight against Collins and her partner Courtney Lymburger but eventually fell 8-6.
No. 2 doubles was also a tight back and forth until Aurora Garrison and Christine Eliazo began to play more aggressive from every part of the court. The pair went on to take the match 8-5. The No. 3 doubles team of Natalie Kelly and Gillian Lowe raced out to an early lead and cruised the rest of the way to an 8-4 win.
The Pioneers depth shined in singles action with the team sweeping through the competition. After a few days off the Garrison sisters made quick work of their opponents in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The younger Garrison defeated Lymburger 6-4, 6-2, while A. Garrison defeated Soph Lundeberg 6-2, 6-4.
Lew pushed past Sylvia Brummitt 6-1, 6-2 as the Pio No. 3, while Glenna Gee-Taylor picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win as the No. 4. Eliazo took down Zoe Brook 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot and Kelly rounded out the Pioneers with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Steph Graziano.
The team returns to the courts on Thursday, March 26 against Cal Lutheran at 3 p.m.
