Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark men's basketball team earned a spot in the Northwest Conference Tournament on Friday night with an 84-60 victory at George Fox.
With the win, the Pioneers improve to 14-10 overall and 9-6 in conference with one game remaining. The Bruins fall to 5-20 on the season and 3-13 in the NWC.
Junior Jason Luhnow led the Pioneers with the games only double-double, knocking down a 14 points and 12 rebounds. The guard also picked up four assists and one steal, while hitting 5-of-9 from the field. Serg Ovchinnikov led all players with 19 points, hitting 7-of-16 from the floor, including 3-of-9 from three point range. Junior Cannen Roberson also ended the night in double-figures with 12 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Carl Appleton collected 10 rebounds for the Pioneers in the win, while also knocking down seven points.
Brendin Quinn was the only Bruin to finish in double-figures, scoring 16 points in the loss.
The Pioneers captured an 8-2 lead with three pointers by Luhnow and Ovchinnikov and a layup by Luhnow with 17:51 to go in the first half. George Fox countered, taking control of the lead three minutes later on a Joshua Caddel three pointer.
The lead change was the first of six to happen in the first half with the two sides also tying the game twice. Lewis & Clark recaptured the lead for good with 8:15 remaining in the first half on a Luhnow layup.
The Pioneers continued to pull away from the Bruins in the second half, after taking a 38-27 lead into the intermission, with the team's largest lead coming at the 1:40 mark. George Fox ended the game on a 9-3 run to cut the deficit to 84-60.
Lewis & Clark returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. in the Pamplin Sports Center against Linfield. The Pioneers will honor graduating seniors Justin Leathers and Brad Carter prior to the contest.
