Men's Basketball Dominates in First NWC Win of the Season

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark men's basketball team moved past the Pacific Boxers 60-36 on Friday night, earning the teams first Northwest Conference win of the season.

Both the Pioneers and the Boxers move to 6-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

The Pioneers were led by a career-high 18 points from Cory Coombe, while ended the night 7-of11 from the floor and 4-of-7 from three point range. Cannen Roberson and Carl Appleton each netted 10 points for the Pioneers in the win, while Jason Luhnow and Bradley Carter each scored six points. Luhnow pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Pioneers and both Roberson and Appleton collected six rebounds for L&C.

DeVon Pouncey netted a team-high eight points for the Boxers, while Mitch Wetting collected nine boards for Pacific.  

Appleton put the Pioneers on the board at the start with a quick jumper. The basket spurred a 12-0 opening run by the Pioneers, which was capped off by a Roberson layup. The Boxers finally got on the board with 13:32 onthe clock, but the Pioneers continued to control the scoreboard increasing their lead to 21-6 with half the period gone.

Lewis & Clark would never allow Pacific closer than nine points until the final minute of the period when Coby Proctor sent the Boxers into the half trailing 30-24.

Coombe pushed the Pioneers to a 12 point, 44-32, lead with 11:56 to go in the contest coutesy of a layup. The Pioneers would never allow the Boxers any closer the rest of the way. A layup by Serg Ovchinnikov earned the Pioneers their first 20 point lead of the game, making it 54-34 Pios with 5:33 left. Another Coombe layup with a little over three minutes left handed the Pioneers their largest lead of the game at 58-35. The Boxers hit just one more basket in the game, cutting their deficit to 58-36 at the final horn.

Lewis & Clark returns home to host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, Jan. 10 for a 6 p.m. tip.
