Sims Leads Men's Basketball to First NWC Victory

TACOMA, Wash. - The Lewis & Clark men's basketball team picked up its first Northwest Conference win of the season on Saturday night, led by 17 points from senior Quentin Sims. The Pioneers collected a 78-68 win over host Pacific Lutheran.

The win moves the Pioneers to 8-3 on the year and 1-1 in Northwest Conference action. The Lutes fall to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in conference.

Sims was strong from three-point range, scoring 15 of his 17 points from behind the arc. The senior guard also led the Pioneers in rebounds, collecting seven boards all on the defensive side of the ball. Kurt Parker and Randall Jackson also scored in double figures for the Pioneers, with Parker knocking down 14 and Jackson 12 points.

Daniel Landram scored 17 points for the Lutes, while Arvid Isaksen pulled down a team-high seven rebounds for PLU.

Lewis & Clark opened the first half on a 12-4 run which was capped off by a made jumper by Jackson at the 13:49 mark. The Lutes bounced back taking control of the scoreboard a little under four minutes later.

It wasn't until a Jackson jumper with 1:20 to go until halftime that the Pioneers recaptured the lead for good, taking a 32-30 advantage.  Sophomore Jason Luhnow hit the final basket of the first half, draining a three with just seven seconds remaining, putting the Pios up 38-32.

Lewis & Clark held the lead the entire second half, capturing its largest lead of the game on a three-pointer by Serg Ovchinnikov with 10:25 remaining. The Pios would hold a 10 point lead a couple times throughout the second half, including at the end when Jackson hit a free-throw with 21 seconds left making it 78-68.

The Pioneers return to the court on Friday, Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. when they host the George Fox Bruins.
