PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark baseball team came from behind to tie game two of its double-header against Whitworth on Saturday, but were unable to pull out the win in extra innings. The Pirates won game one 6-2 before earning a 12-8 win in game two.
The Pioneers scored first in game one, with Nick Lavin bringing in freshman Eric Hyun with a sacrifice bunt.
Whitworth countered in the top of the second inning with a single run of its own with Kevin Valerio driving in Paul Miller. The Pirates took a 3-1 advantage in the third inning with Erik Nikssaria coming around to score on a Pioneer error. The second run of the inning came in on a RBI single up the middle by Landon Scott.
Gerhard Muelheims came in to score another Pirate run in the sixth after doubling to right center with two outs. Whitworth took a 5-1 lead in the seventh after the Pioneer pitcher hit Michael Takemura with the bases loaded.
Lewis & Clark scored its only other run of the game in the eighth inning on a RBI single from Hyun that allowed Jake Costantino to cross the plate.
Valerio came in to score the final run of the game in the top of the ninth.
Lewis & Clark once again scored first in game two with Parker Dane coming in after a bases loaded walk to Mike Kinkenon.
Whitworth answered back in the top of the second with three runs, starting with a sacrifice bunt from Joshua Davis. Muelheims knocked in the other two runs with a double to left field.
Dane pulled the Pioneers even with the Pirates in the Pioneers half of the inning with a double of his own that scored Geoff Wertz and Hayden Higger. Michael Ball scored Dane with the next at bat with a single.
Down 4-3, Whitworth added four runs in the third starting with a double to right field by Miller that brought in two Pirates. Nikssaria also knocked in two runs in the inning. Another Pirate double in the fourth put Whitworth ahead 8-4.
Down to their last three outs, the Pioneers put together a solid ninth inning that saw them come back to tie the contest. The runs started coming in with a double to left field by Dane that allowed Higger to score. Ball followed that up with a double of his own that scored both Dane and Hyun. The tying run came in on a Lavin double down the right field line, scoring Ball.
Tied 8-8 the two sides headed into extra innings with the Pioneers seeming to have the momentum. After a rocky start to the tenth that loaded the bases, it appeared the Pioneers would make it out of the inning after Scott lined out to Ball. That proved not to be the case as JR Jarrell picked up his first hit of the game with a grandslam over the fence in left field.
The Pioneers were unable to put together another comeback inning as the Pirates walked away with the 12-8 win.
