TACOMA, Wash. - The Lewis & Clark baseball team dropped a tough game to the Puget Sound Loggers on Saturday afternoon in Northwest Conference action. The Loggers squeezed out a 12-8 win in the first game with a final inning grandslam, before taking game two 6-2.
Nick Lavin started the scoring for the Pioneers with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to score Eric Hyun.
The Loggers Will Mentor and Matt Cox each drove in runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Pioneers took advantage of a couple Logger errors in the second inning, recapturing the lead with four runs. Mike Kinkenon was the first run to come in after a Hyun fielder's choice, while Corey Davis was close behind after a Logger error allowed him to also come home. A well executed first and third play by the Pioneers allowed freshman Evan Gray to steal home for the third run of the inning. Michael Ball drove in the final run with a single to left that allowed Hyun to come in from third.
Geoff Wertz tacked on another run in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to left field that brought in Jake Costantino.
The Loggers earned a run back in the fourth but Lewis & Clark responded with another run of its own in the fifth. Lavin plated the Pios run in the fifth after leading off the inning with a single to the shortstop. Lavin quickly made his way around the bases before coming home on a single by Davis.
A two-run homerun in the sixth inning by the Loggers by Christian Carter made it a 7-5 game. The Loggers pulled within a run in the eighth with a single by Mentor.
The Pioneers made it a two run game in the top of the ninth with Lavin scoring on a Kinkenon single.
The bottom of the ninth proved to be the Pioneers downfall as the team led off the inning with a walk to Johnny Hosmer. Puget Sound continued to find a way to put people on base, eventually pulling within one on a single that scored Hosmer. Another walk loaded the bases for UPS and a wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed the tying run to score. The Pioneers then walked another Logger to once again load the bases as Casey Coberly came up to bat. Coberly then ended the game with a grandslam over the left field fence.
Like in the first game, the Pioneers jumped ahead early with Lavin doubling to score Ball who walked with two outs. Lavin then brought in Parker Dane in the third inning to give the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage.
The Loggers tied things up in the fifth after four Pioneer errors. Puget Sound captured the lead in the eighth with four runs coming in.
Lewis & Clark would be unable to respond in the ninth picking up its second loss of the series.
