WALLA WALLa, Wash. - The Lewis & Clark baseball team picked up a 4-3 win over Whitman College on Saturday afternoon in Northwest Conference action. The Pioneers and Missionaries were scheduled for a double-header but rain caused came two to be postponed in the fourth inning with the Pioneers up 4-2.
Senior Michael Ball finished the contest 3-for-4 from the plate, while walking once. Seniors Parker Dane and Nick Lavin each finished 3-for-5 batting. Ball also picked up his third complete game victory of the season, as well as his second consecutive.
Lewis & Clark got on the board early, plating two runs in the first inning. The first run came in on a Lavin single to right field. Freshman Andrew Traver helped bring in the next run with a hard hit ball to the short stop, which was mishandled allowing Ball to score.
Whitman cut the Pio lead in half in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers earned the run back in the second inning, after Eric Hyun reached base on a double to right field with two outs. Hyun eventually made his way home after advancing to third on a wild pitch before a Dane single allowed him to trot home.
The Missionaries earned another run back in the bottom of the third inning making it a 3-2 game.
Another RBI single from Lavin brought in the Pioneers fourth and final run of the contest. A Lewis & Clark error in the fifth inning allowed the final Whitman run to score.
Game two will be resumed at noon on Sunday prior to the start of game three.
