Baseball Opens Home Play With Two Loses to Corban

GAME ONE

GAME TWO

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark baseball team fell to Corban 6-3 on Sunday in game one of the double-header before falling 4-2 in the second contest.

Junior Geoff Wertz ended game one 3-for-4 for the Pioneers, scoring once and picking up one RBI. Corey Davis was 2-for-3 from the plate.

Gallegos was the Warriors best batter in game one, finishing 3-for-4, scoring once and knocking in one run. Foster finished the game 2-for-4.

Michael Ball put the Pioneers on top with a lead off homerun in the fourth inning. The Warriors came back in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on two hits and a Pioneer error. Corban extended its lead in sixth with four runs to take a 6-1 advantage.

Wertz earned a run back for the Pioneers in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double to left field that scored freshman Eric Hyun. With two outs, senior Nick Lavin doubled to right center, bringing Wertz around to score. Parker Dane followed the Lavin double with a single, putting runners at the corners for the Pios. That would be as close as the Pios would come to scoring again with the next batter flying out to end the game.

Hyun finished game two 2-for-3 for the Pioneers, starting in the lead off spot, while coming around to score one of the teams two runs. Freshman Mike Kinkenon came in for Lavin after one inning of action and finished his day 2-for-2 from the plate.

Foster started the scoring for the Warrirors in the third inning, driving in Kunnel with a single to short. Corban extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, beginning with a Hill double down the right line that brought Johansen in to score from second. Kunnel picked up an RBI with the next Warrior at bat, grounding out to third base, but not before Bost came in to score.

Lewis & Clark responded with a run in the bottom half of the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-1. Hyun led off the inning with a double to right field, immediately putting a runner in scoring position. Hyun advanced to third with the next Pioneer at bat, before being driven in by Ball on a ground out to short.

It took until the seventh inning for either team to score again, with the Warriors plating another run in the top half of the inning.

The Pioneers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Despite driving in just one run, the Pios put together their best half inning of the game in the seventh. Davis began the inning with a single to right field, followed by a Kinkenon single down the left line. After a Warrior pitching change, Dane reached base on a fielder's choice with Davis advancing to third and Kinkenon being thrown out at second. Freshman Andrew Traver brought Davis home with a double to right center. With two runners in scoring position and one out, the Corban pitcher settled in to retire the next to Pios.

Lewis & Clark returns to the field on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 12 p.m. with the start of Northwest Conference action on the road at Linfield.
