PASCO, Wash. – The Lewis & Clark baseball team opened the 2012 season on Friday afternoon at Swing into Spring Baseball Classic with a 14-5 loss to the Whitworth Pirates.
The young Pioneer side trailed 10-0 through the first five innings, before plating three runs in the top of the sixth. The Pirates responded in the bottom half of the inning, earning two runs back to take a 12-3 advantage.
Down 14-3 heading into the ninth inning, the Pioneers sent two more runners across the plate to cut the deficit to 14-5.
Seniors Parker Dane and Michael Ball each finished the game with a double, as did freshman Andrew Traver. All three players, along with senior Nick Lavin finished the contest with an RBI.
Sophomore Mike Hathaway got the start for the Pioneers, subsequently taking the loss. Freshmen EJ Hand and Kyle Tibbett also took the mound for the Pioneers.
The team returns to the classic on Saturday, Feb. 11 with a game against Puget Sound at 12:30 before taking on the Pirates once again at 3 p.m.
