PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark baseball team dropped an 8-4 decision to Pacific Lutheran on Friday afternoon in game one of its Northwest Conference double-header. The Lutes then picked up a 14-1 win in the second game.
The loses drops the Pioneers to 5-31 on the season and 3-20 in conference. The Lutes improve to 17-14 overall and 12-8 in the NWC.
Pacific Lutheran scored a run in the second inning of game one, with Nick Hall knocking in Corey Moore with an RBI single. The Lutes extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the next inning, starting with a lead-off homerun by Dan Johanson. Brock Gates came in to score moments later, followed by Ryan Frost to conclude the scoring.
The Pioneers earned a run back in the home half of the third on a double to right center by Geoff Wertz. The Wertz double allowed Andrew Frisina to round the bases and head home from first base.
Lewis & Clark pulled within two runs in the fourth inning, scoring another run to cut the Lute lead to 4-2. Nick Lavin scored the Pioneer run after being brought in by a Parker Dane single.
The Lutes earned both runs back in the top of the fifth inning with Gates and Frost once again coming in to score. Johanson added another run for the Lutes, driving in a run on a sacrifice fly to center.
Dane helped the Pioneers earn a run back in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice of his own that allowed Sam Holman to score. Lavin came around to score moments later on a sac fly from Wertz.
PLU finished the scoring in the top of the ninth with a solo shot from Frost.
Game two was all Lutes, with PLU putting together two four run innings. The Pioneers only run of the game came in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Michael Ball that scored Jasper Dean.
The two sides return to action for the final game of the series on Saturday at noon. The Pioneers will celebrate 'Senior Day' prior to the start.
