PORTLAND, OR.-
Much stronger than their record shows, the Lutes roll for their first conference win of the season. Having lost a couple close matches already this season, the Lutes would clinch today's match early.
Giving up only four games in doubles action as a team, the Lutes played textbook doubles to keep the Pioneers at bay. Scott Sheldon and Taylor Dickey made George Allen and Quinn Roth-Carter come up with amazing shots time after time to win the few games that they did. Zack Ah Yat and Neal Berg won 8-1 over Cole Pfeiffer and Sam Franer in a one-sided match. Muneeb Khan and Gabriel Trepanier couldn't keep up with the big serving of Michael Parretta and David Cotton in a 8-1 loss.
Singles action saw some more competitive matches with two rallies by the Pioneers falling short. George Allen and Sam Franer dropped their first sets by a 6-1 score but both Pios would fight hard in their second sets only to fall 6-4 in both. The closest match of the afternoon would come at the #6 singles flight where Marshall McNally and Gabriel Trepanier would take it the distance in the last match of the day. Trepanier would take a while to get used to McNally's left handed kick serve but after dropping the first set 6-3, the Pio would take the second set in convincing fashion, 6-1. With both teams cheering on every last point of the match breaker, McNally played aggressively throughout to take the nail biter 12-10 to finish the sweep for the Lutes.
The Pios take on the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma next Friday.
