PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark baseball team fell to the Concordia Cavaliers 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon at the Huston Sports Complex in a non-conference contest.
Concordia got on the board in the top of the second inning with a single run scored by Tim Reavis. Reavis came around to score on a well placed bunt from Mike Dickman down the left field line.
Lewis & Clark countered in the third inning with two runs. With two outs the Pioneers rallied to score Gianluca Giarrizzo and Michael Ball. Giarrizzo led off the inning, reaching base on a fielding error by the Cavalier third baseman. Ball picked up the RBI on the Giarrizzo run, singling to left center. Ball would come around to score moments later on a single to right field from Eliot Smith.
Things began to unravel for the Pioneers in the sixth inning, as the Cavaliers managed to score five runs on just two hits. With the bases loaded by two hit batters and a fielding error, Danny Brown walked to bring in Brady Miletich. A single by Odie Hollingshed brought in two other Cavalier runs, followed by a two RBI double by Riley Tubbs.
The Pios earned a run back in the bottom half of the inning, making the score 6-3 on an RBI single by Giarrizzo.
Heading into their final at bat, the Pioneers rallied to earn a run back with Geoff Wetz coming around to score on a single to right field by Smith.
Wertz, Smith and Tucker Laurence ended the game 2-for-5 from the plate. Smith picked up two RBI's on the day, while Wertz came around to score once.
Mike Hathaway pitched seven innings for the Pioneers allowing five runs on five hits in the loss. Steven Taft picked up the win for the Cavaliers, while Jared Young earned the save.
The Pioneers return to the field on Saturday, March 26 when they travel to Tacoma to take on Puget Sound for a Northwest Conference double-header.
