PORTLAND, OR.-

In the most competitive match of the season, several Pioneers pick up their first wins of the season in a 7-2 loss to Cal Tech.  The day started with singles action as the threat of rain changed the normal order of play.

Freshman Sam Franer would get the Pios off to a positive start with a 6-3, 6-1 win in fairly convincing fashion.  Everything seemed to click for Franer, who tallied the first win of his career.  The Beavers would sweep the rest of the singles matches, but not without a fight from the Pios.  The most competitive matches would come in the #1 and #4 flights.  Kerry White pushed Ben Lieber in the second set after he dropped the first fairly quickly.  White would build a 4-1 before Lieber stormed back to win the next five games to take the match.  Playing in the marathon match of the day at #1 singles, George Allen and Devashish Joshi would play through two grueling sets.  Joshi seemed to have the answers late in sets as he pulled off amazing shots in the most crucial times to pull out the win.

Doubles action saw another first for the Pioneers, as the #1 team of Allen and Quinn Roth-Carter teamed up for their first win of the year.  Going in believing that they needed to take play aggressively, the two used big serving and aggressive net play to jump out to a lead and hold on to win 8-4.  Kerry White and Sam Franer had their best showing of the year in a rally that came up short in a 8-5 loss to Anish Argawal and Alex Runkel.  Anjian Wu and Lieber closed out the match with a 8-2 win at the #3 slot.

Gabriel Trepanier also came up with his first win in a 6-4, 6-3 win in a non-counting match.

The Pioneers play their second match of the day against the nationally ranked Stags of Claremont Mckenna at 6 pm.
