Baseball Drops 12-10 Decision To Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark baseball team dropped a 12-10 decision to the Pacific Boxers on Sunday afternoon in Northwest Conference baseball action. The win gave the Boxers the series sweep.

The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-7 on the season and 0-3 in conference action. The Boxers improve to 7-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 to start the NWC season.

Lewis & Clark received a 3 for 4 performance by sophomore Eliot Smith, which included three runs batted in. Gianluca Giarrizzo, Tucker Laurence and Geoff Wertz each had two hits.

Sophomore relief pitcher Hardeep Gujral took the loss for the Pioneers, allowing three runs on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 2.1innings of work.

Smith started the scoring for the Pioneers in the second inning, batting in Laurence and Roland Greene, who had both reached base earlier in the inning.

Pacific stormed back to score nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Lewis & Clark earned a run back in the sixth inning on another clutch hit by Smith. Smith hit a double to right field to drive in Nick Lavin for his third RBI of the day.

The Pioneers put together a seven run eighth inning to recapture the lead. Senior Sam Holman plated the first run after scoring on a sacrifice fly by Smith. Giuseppe Baffaro followed that up with an RBI single that scored Lavin. Wertz came around to score later in the inning on a Boxer error, followed by a two run single by Laurence. Greene brought in another Pio runner with a hard hit single down the left field line. Lavin capped off the scoring with a single to third that brought Laurence around to put the Pios up 10-9.

Pacific responded in the bottom half of the eighth, when Gujral gave up four walks and a run on a wild pitch. Two more runs came around to score later, putting Pacific up 12-10.

The Pioneers had a shot at a comeback in the ninth but were unlucky as the Boxers put together a solid defensive showing.

Lewis & Clark returns to action on March 5 when they host the Willamette Bearcats.
