Pios Lose Conference Opener

Boxscore

by Jimmy Chau

PORTLAND, OR.-

Men's tennis falls 9-0, as they can't find their range against the Whitworth Pirates in Spokane.

A quality opponent shows how far the Pios have left to go to compete for respectability in an increasingly tougher Northwest Conference.  There weren't many highlights for the Pioneers on a night where their youth definitely showed as they were blanked in five of the nine matches contested.

The only doubles match to be close was at the #1 flight where senior George Allen and Junior Quinn Roth-Carter managed to take three games from Colin Zalewski and Joe Wales.  Allen went on in singles to play a much closer match then the score would suggest, losing to Daniel Redfern 6-3, 6-1.  Freshman Sam Franer, would be the only other Pio to play a competitive match in a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Colin Barrett.

It's going to be a process for these Pioneers to develop into players who are consistently competitive but coach Tilmanis is happy to be working with the most committed and driven team he has had in years.

The Pios return home to host the Linfield Wildcats on Saturday at 2 pm.
