PORTLAND, Ore. - Senior Kelly Edwards scored 36 points for the Lewis & Clark men's basketball team on Friday evening in the Pamplin Sports Complex to lead the Pioneers over the George Fox Bruins 80-70.
Edwards finished the night 10-19 from the field, 3-8 from three-point range and an impressive 13-14 from the charity stripe. Donato Perconti contributed 14 points to the Pioneer attack, while Kyle Meeuwsen and Marcus Wells each finished with 11. Edwards was no slouch on the defensive side of the ball, coming down with seven rebounds as did Meeuwsen.
The first half opened with a three from Edwards, but the Bruins would respond with a 9-2 run to take control of the game. Lewis & Clark answered back with an 8-0 run led by Wells who put the team up 13-9 with 12:38 to play. Control of the game would once again flip back to the Bruins who went on a 9-2 run to pick up an 18-15 lead with 10:15 to play. Perconti tied things up second later, while Edwards would put the Pios up for good with a made free-throw with 9:19 to go in the first half. The Pioneers would cruise to a 41-33 advantage that they would take into the locker room.
The Pioneers were in control of the second half from the start, running up a 12-point lead, 68-65, with 6:10 on the clock courtesy of an Edwards three-pointer. The Bruins would pull within four points with a little over three minutes remaining, but that would as close as they would come. He would go on to sink eight free-throws in the final three minutes of the game to help keep the Pioneers in front.
The Pioneers return to the court on Jan. 14 when they travel to take on the Pacific Lutheran Lutes at 8 p.m.
