PARKLAND, Wash. - In two polar opposite games,
the Lewis & Clark baseball team dropped both games on its
Northwest Conference double-header against the Pacific Lutheran
Lutes on Saturday afternoon in Parkland, Wash. The Lutes earned a
23-2 victory in the first game, before battling the Pioneers
through 11 innings to pull out a 4-3 win.
The Pioneers fall to 9-23 on the season and 6-17 in conference
play. The Lutes improve to 29-7 overall and 17-3 in the NWC.
Game one was never close with the Lutes scoring five runs
in the first inning. The Pioneers earned a run back in the third
inning on a sacrifice fly by Parker Dane that brought Guiseppe
Bafarro into score. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, the Lutes
would go onto score 18 runs over the next six innings,
including three runs each from the fourth through seventh frames.
Game two was drastically different than the first, with the two
teams battling through 11 innings in order to find a victor. Junior
pitcher Alex St. Pierre had a tremendous showing on the mound for
the Pioneers, pitching 10 innings, allowing just three runs on
eight hits, while striking out five.
The Lutes held a 3-0 lead before the Pioneers were able to get
on the board. Bafarro and Michael Ball came around to score for the
Pioneers in the top of the eighth inning, pulling the Pioneers
within one run, on a single by Eliot Smith.
Roland Greene tied the game in the ninth inning, after reaching
base on a double. St. Pierre and the Pioneers were able to retire
the Lutes in the bottom of the ninth sending the game to extra
innings.
Pacific Lutheran was able to get the deciding run in the 11th
inning after the lead-off batter came around to score.
The Pioneers and Lutes will battle again on Sunday, April 25 at
noon in the final game of the three game Northwest Conference
series.
