FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark
baseball team could not overcome the Pacific Boxers in a
non-conference road contest on Tuesday night at the Chuck Bafaro
Stadium, falling 9-5 after putting together a late game rally.
The loss drops the Pioneers to 9-21 on the season, while the
Boxers improve to 13-21.
Pacific earned a 1-0 lead in the first inning and then tacked on
its second run in the bottom of the next inning of play. Freshman
Zac Perez pulled the Pioneers within a run in the top of the third
inning, leading off the inning with a walk. Perez would come around
to score from second moments later on a fielder's choice.
Junior Tucker Laurence tied things in the fourth inning after
reaching on another leadoff walk. A walk to Nate Grisham moved
Laurence to second, before a fielder's choice allowed him to
advance to third. With senior Jim Bray at first, the Pioneers
worked the double-steal to their advantage, sending Bray to second
and coercing a Boxer throw to second allowing Laurence to steal
home.
The Boxers recaptured the lead in the fourth inning, before
taking a 7-2 lead in the sixth inning. Two Pioneer errors in the
seventh inning proved costly, allowing the Boxers to plate two more
insurance runs.
The Pioneers made one last effort for the victory in the top of
the ninth, scoring three runs on five singles to make things 9-5.
With the tying run at the plate, the Pacific reliever won the
battle, ensuring a Boxer win.
Lewis & Clark returns to the field on Saturday, April 24 as
the team travels to Tacoma, Wash., for a conference series against
Pacific Lutheran.
