Pioneer Baseball Takes Down Corban

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – Scoring seven runs in the first inning of action, the Lewis & Clark baseball team triumphed over the Corban Warriors on Tuesday afternoon, winning a non-conference road game, 9-3, at Warrior Field. With the win the Pioneers improve to 6-11 on the season.

The Pioneers opened the game scoring seven runs on just five hits in the top of the first inning, with the highlight coming off the bat of senior Jim Bray on a huge three-run home run over the left field wall. The home run is Bray's third of the season. With a 5-0 advantage, the Pioneers plated two more runs in the inning to pick up the early 7-0 lead.

Junior Nate Grisham knocked in the Pioneers eighth run in the fourth inning on a double to left center, allowing Tucker Laurence to score. Laurence had reached base earlier on a lead-off single down the left field line.

The Warriors managed to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, with a double to center field to cut the Pioneers lead to 8-1.

The Pios ninth and final run came in the top of the fifth on a Michael Ball solo home run down the left field line.

Corban's second run came in the bottom of the eighth inning, before they tacked on their third run in the ninth.

Freshman Zach Perez led the way for the Pios, hitting 3-for-5 on the day, while Ball, Grisham and junior Sam Holman added two hits each. Junior Ryo Kawashima picked up the win for the Pios, opening five innings of action, allowing one run on five hits. Hardeep Guijral and Walter Pultinas each came in to pitch a combination of four innings of relief.

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, March 24 when they take on Concordia at the Houston Sports Complex at 1 p.m. Even though the game will be played on the Pioneers home field, they will be the visiting team, while Concordia will be the hosts.
