PORTLAND, Ore. – The Willamette Bearcats
were able to get the best of the Lewis & Clark men's
basketball team on Tuesday night at the Pamplin Sports Complex, as
the Pioneers fell 80-73 in a Northwest Conference match-up.
With the loss, the Pios fall to 8-13 on the season and 7-6 in the
NWC. The Bearcats improve to 7-15 and 4-9 in conference play.
The Pioneers opened the game on top with a jumper from Josh
Kollasch who hit a jumper with 18:03 on the clock. The Bearcats
were able to quickly counter, running up an 11 point, 13-2, lead
with 15:39 left in the first period. Kollasch recaptured the lead
for the Pios with 11:06 on the clock after hitting another jumper
that swung the score to 19-18 Pios. A long range three from James
Hollins with a little over four minutes remaining in the half
handed the Pios a six point, 36-30, lead which was their largest of
the half. Willamette, led by Cameron Mitchell, were able to pull
within three points as the teams headed into the half with the Pios
leading 40-37.
A Kollasch three-pointer six minutes into the second half increased
the Pios lead to seven points, with the assist coming from Kelly
Edwards. The Bearcats were able to compose themselves, unleashing
an offensive assault that saw them take control of the scoreboard
with 9:44 remaining in the contest. After the Ryan Meehan jumper
the Bearcats would never trail again, handing the Pios the 80-73
loss.
Kollasch finished with a game-high 28 points for the Pios and
completed his double-double with 10 rebounds. The senior shot
10-of-17 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, while
also dishing out four assists. Kyle Meeuwsen finished with 18
points, while Hollins contributed 10 points.
Mitchell led the Bearcats in points with 23, while Taylor Mounts
had 16 and Meehan finished with 15.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. for
their final home game of the 2009-10 season as they host Pacific.
Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. with the team honoring their departing
seniors prior to the start of the game.
