PORTLAND, Ore. – After closing out the first
half on a scoring frenzy, the Lewis & Clark men's
basketball team cruised to a 72-46 victory over the Pacific
Lutheran Lutes on Saturday night in a Northwest Conference contest
at the Pamplin Sports Complex.
The victory improves the Pioneers overall record to 8-12, while
making them 7-5 in conference play. The victory also ties the
Pioneers for third place in the conference with the George Fox
Bruins. The Lutes fall one game behind the Pios and Bruins with
tonight's loss, slipping to 8-11 overall and 6-6 in
conference play.
The Pioneers opened the first half on fire, running up a 10-2 lead
in the first three minutes of action. The Lutes were slowly able to
work their way back into the contest, pulling within two points a
couple times, but the Pios would quickly squash an hopes that they
may have had of taking control of the lead. A jumper from sophomore
James Hollins with 5:36 remaining in the half kick started the
Pioneers offense once again. The Pios went on to score 23
consecutive points, closing out the half with a 22-point, 41-19,
advantage.
The second half continued right where the first half left off, with
the Pioneers in full control of the game. PJ Taylor put the
Pioneers up 44-19 out of the gates after knocking down a long range
three-pointer, before hitting another three seconds later to put
the Pios up 47-21. The Lutes, who scored a basket here and there,
were never able to pull the score out of the double-digits, with
the Pioneers holding a 20+ point advantage the entire half. The
Pios largest lead came with 36 seconds to play in the game, when
Nick Robinson hit a jumper that put the Pios up 29 points, 72-43.
The Lutes Cameron Reister hit a three-pointer in the closing
seconds of the contest to give the Pioneers a 72-46 victory.
Taylor led all players in points, scoring 19 points, while James
Hollins picked up his team leading sixth double-double of the
season. Hollins posted 17 points while coming down with 13 boards,
11 of which came on the defensive side of the ball. Josh Kollasch
contributed 14 points, while finishing with a game-high seven
assists.
The Lutes picked up 12 points from Gabe Smith and 11 points from
Curtis Trondsen.
The Pioneers return to the court on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. when
they host the Willamette Bearcats.
