PORTLAND, Ore. - Paced by 31 points by senior
Kelly Edwards, the Lewis & Clark men's basketball team came out
on fire against the Whitman Missionaries on Saturday night in the
Pamplin Sports Complex. The Pioneers picked up their first
conference win of the season as five Pios ended the night in
double-digits in scoring.
The two sides battled back and forth in the first half of
action, with the Missionaries taking a 48-46 lead into the locker
room at the intermission. The Pioneers fought back in the second
half, outscoring Whitman 49-33, while shooting nearly 60% from the
floor.
Edwards came up big for the Pios hitting 12-15 from the floor,
which included 5-7 from three-point range. The 6-3 guard also
knocked down 2-3 from the free throw line and dished out four
assists. Junior James Hollins ended his night with 19 points and
seven assists. Kyle Meeuwsen was 5-9 from the floor for 15 points,
while PJ Taylor scored 13 and Donato Perconti chipped in 10.
The Pios were just as solid on defense, with both Edwards and
Perconti coming down with a team-high seven rebounds. Perconti also
came up with three steals, while Hollins took away two from the
Missionaries.
Ryan Gilkey led the way for the Missionaries, recording the
games only double-double as he scored 11 points and came down with
11 boards. Josh Duckworth finished the evening with a team-high 13
points, while Drew Raher chipped in 12 points.
The Pioneers return to action on Thursday, Dec. 16 when they
travel to take on Cal Maritime. Tip-off is set for 7:30
p.m.
