GAME ONE
GAME TWO
TACOMA, Wash. – It was a battle of wills at
Logger Field, as the Lewis & Clark baseball team tangled with
Puget Sound in baseball action on Sunday, April 5. The Loggers
managed to pull out wins in both games, defeating the Pioneers by
one point in each contest. UPS won game one 2-1 before earning a
hard fought 9-8 victory in game two.
The Pioneers had the lead early in game one, jumping out to a 1-0
lead in the third inning of action. Sam Holman came around to score
the run for the Pios after leading off the inning with a single up
the middle. A sacrifice bunt by Tucker Laurence allowed Holman to
advance a base, putting the first runner of the game in scoring
position. Michael Ball followed Laurence's sacrifice with a
single to left field that brought Holman home.
Lewis & Clark looked poised to pick up the win heading into
the final innings of play. Just as things were winding down, the
Loggers scored a run in the sixth inning with a leadoff home run,
tying the game 1-1. Puget Sound put the game away in the bottom of
the seventh plating one more run on two hits, ending the game.
Puget Sound came out of the gates in the second game ready to
play, putting up five runs in the first inning of play. The
Pioneers were able to earn one run back in the top of the fourth
inning with Parker Dane coming around to score.
The Loggers picked the run back up in the bottom of the inning,
once again reclaiming their five run advantage. UPS tacked on three
more runs in the bottom of the next inning, increasing its lead to
eight.
Lewis & Clark refused to be counted out, putting a run up on
the board in the top of the sixth inning courtesy of a Roland
Greene sacrifice fly. Greene's fly to center field allowed
Sami Morgan come around from third.
The seventh and final inning proved to be the defining moment in
the game, with the Pios giving it all they had to come from behind
to capture the lead. The inning began with a single from Jordan
Wlodarczyk, who ended up at third after a throwing an error by the
left fielder put the ball in no mans land. A.J. Brown followed
Wlodarczyk with a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing his
teammate to come around and score.
The Pioneers continued to play small ball and allowing the Logger
pitching staff to help them out, leading to a bases loaded
situation with two outs. With the bases loaded the Pios
couldn't have asked for a better batter at the plate, as
Laurence strolled up to the plate. As he's done all season,
Laurence proved to be the difference maker, hitting a grand slam
over the wall in left center, cutting the Logger lead to one.
Despite pulling within one, that would be as close as the Pioneers
would be able to come as UPS was able to retire the next Pio
batter.
Lewis & Clark returns to action on Friday, April 10 as they
host Linfield at 12 p.m. at the Houston Sports Complex.
