GAME ONE
GAME TWO
PORTLAND, Ore. – Home runs were the name of
the game in the Tuesday afternoon doubleheader featuring the Lewis
& Clark Pioneers and Pacific Lutheran Lutes, as the Lutes swept
the Northwest Conference matchup from the Pioneers. PLU won the
closely contested opener, 3-2, before rolling to a 13-0 victory in
the nightcap, with the Lutes hitting five home runs on the day.
The Pioneers are now 7-23 overall while slipping to 7-18 in
conference play. The Lutes, 23-8 overall, improved their conference
record to 19-5, moving into a second-place tie with defending
champion Linfield.
In the first game, the Pioneers came from behind to earn a 2-1
advantage in the third inning of action starting with a fielding
error by the Lutes. Neal Finch was the recipient of the Lute error,
leading off the inning with a shot that the third baseman could not
handle, putting the Pioneer catcher on first. Finch came around to
score three batters later with a single by Sami Morgan. Tucker
Laurence scored the Pios second run of the inning, after reaching
base on a single to left field.
The Lutes rallied from the 2-1 deficit after three innings, tying
it in the fourth and scoring the winning run in the sixth. In the
top of the fourth, Geoff Gabler led off with a single, advanced to
third on an error and scored on a double play ground out.
The Lutes' winning run came from Matt Akridge, who started the
rally with a double and was lifted for pinch runner Jaron Iwakami.
He scored when Sammy Davis followed with a single.
The second game was scoreless through three innings, but the Lutes
broke loose for five runs in the fourth inning and seven more in
the fifth inning.
The Pioneers return to action on April 18 on the road against
Pacific, with the first pitch set for 12 p.m.
